The Obesity Collective was invited to participate in the NSW Preventive Health Summit 2026, held on 7 and 9 October in Parramatta, Western Sydney. The summit formed part of the NSW Government’s response to the Special Commission of Inquiry into Healthcare Funding, which highlighted the need for a greater focus on prevention. Discussions were also informed by the recently released Health of the People of NSW 2026 report.
The summit brought together organisations and experts to identify practical, evidence-based opportunities to strengthen prevention efforts across the state and improve long-term health outcomes for the people of NSW.
Key themes included chronic disease risk factors such as smoking, obesity, alcohol use and physical activity; immunisation; mental health support; expanded scopes of practice for paramedics and allied health professionals; and the health needs of priority Aboriginal populations.
The Obesity Collective participated in a session focused on the health system, contributing to discussions on addressing stigma within healthcare and wider society. The discussion drew on the experiences and perspectives of Weight Issues Network (WIN), highlighting the importance of lived experience in shaping more inclusive and effective approaches to healthcare.
NSW Health is currently synthesising the outcomes and workshop findings to prepare a formal report for submission to the NSW Government.
