Feedback submission – Draft National Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Strategy

Stigma and discrimination create significant barriers to high-quality healthcare and can negatively impact the mental and physical health of individuals. The National Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Strategy aims to address this issue in Australia by implementing strategic actions to reduce stigma and discrimination in various settings.

While the strategy primarily focuses on mental health stigma, it is essential to acknowledge all forms of stigma and how they can impact health and well-being. We believe that the scope of the strategy should be expanded to include all types of stigma, including weight stigma, as stigma is rarely experienced in isolation. For example, experiencing weight stigma poses significant risk to mental health. The strategy needs to take a holistic approach to ensure that efforts to reduce stigma do not inadvertently perpetuate stigma associated with other conditions or identities.

The Obesity Collective’s Stigma Expertise team developed recommendations that focused on four priority areas:

  1. Implementing foundation actions across settings to address stigma and discrimination
  2. Reducing structural stigma and discrimination
  3. Reducing public stigma
  4. Reducing self-stigma

The draft National Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Strategy is a step in the right direction to address the significant issue of stigma and discrimination in Australia. By implementing evidence-based initiatives and involving people with lived experience in all priority areas, we can reduce all forms of stigma and improve the health and well-being of individuals impacted by stigma.
